Evening comes as a burial: the church bell rings out the day and a black cloud takes the sun. The bell — in England, the parish bell marking the hours and the dead — is the sequence’s recurring sound of time. It returns as the bell buoy tolling in the swell of The Dry Salvages, a bell rung not by human hands.
