    Burnt Norton I · Line 40 · heart of light

    The phrase recalls the ‘hyacinth garden’ passage in the first part of The Waste Land (1922), where the speaker, looking into ‘the heart of light’, knows nothing and is lost in silence. There the moment of intensity ends in paralysis; here, a garden again, it is briefly radiant. The echo links Burnt Norton’s rose-garden with the earlier poem’s failed moment of love.
