Burnt Norton I · Line 35 · into the box circle

Box is the clipped evergreen used for the hedges of formal gardens; a ‘box circle’ is a round enclosure of such hedging. The garden at Burnt Norton is a formal one, laid out with hedged walks and ornamental pools. The walkers move along its alley ‘in a formal pattern’ — the garden’s geometry already suggests the ordered movement of a dance, which the second movement will make explicit.
