    The walkers look down into an empty ornamental pool — dry concrete, weathered at the edges. The emptiness may be literal — an ornamental pool left dry — and it is certainly symbolic: a vessel for water that holds none, like the ‘first world’ that can be looked into but not re-entered. What happens next depends on the pool being empty.
