A roll-call of London districts scattered across the city — Hampstead, Highgate and Primrose Hill to the north, Clerkenwell and Ludgate in the old centre, Putney to the south-west. ‘Campden’ is most likely Campden Hill in Kensington, the district where Eliot lived in the 1930s. Several of the names are hills, which gives point to the wind sweeping the ‘gloomy hills of London’: the city’s heights, reduced to stops on a line.
