Burnt Norton II · Line 42 · the draughty church at smokefall

‘Smokefall’ is a rare word, apparently made on the model of ‘nightfall’: the hour when chimney smoke sinks in the cooling evening air. The coinage compresses a whole urban dusk into one word, and the church it is attached to is not grand but draughty — the sequence consistently finds its moments of meaning in unremarkable places.
